Civil Air Patrol Web Security Administration Contacts

These Nebraska Wing contacts are available to help our membership. They can also refer members to CAP personnel in their areas for local support.

NEWG WEB SECURITY ADMINISTRATION

All Unit Web Security Officer (WSO) appointments must be submitted to the Chief of Staff, Mission Support in writing, military style format memorandum showing the appointee's name, membership ID number, unit charter number and be signed by the squadron commander.

The Chief of Staff, Mission support is the approving authority on all WSO appointments with the wing commander's concurence.  Removal of appointed WSO's follow the same procedure.

CAP.GOV DOMAIN ADMINISTRATION

The CAP.GOV domain has been delegated to the Civil Air Patrol and is a valuable asset  in CAP communications.  The domain is administered through a network of domain name servers situated in locations around the world.

Frequently asked questions:

How does a CAP unit obtain a CAP.GOV domain name?

Over 90% of the requests for a CAP.GOV domain name assignment are handled within 1-business day of receiving the required information.   Here is a recommended procedure on how to proceed:

1. Review the 2-page regulation applicable to CAP Internet operations, CAPR-110-1 (Note: this link will open a new browser window and leave this site.)   All CAP.GOV web sites must also conform to applicable  Federal Guidelines.

2. Contact your wing headquarters webmaster or Information Technology officer as that person can advise if the wing can arrange for Internet server services to host a CAP.GOV domain for your unit.  That person should also be able to assist you in obtaining the required approval from the wing or higher commander or designee to utilize a CAP.GOV domain.

A “naming convention” is used for assignment of CAP.GOV  domains as follows: wings and regions are assigned 3rd-level names such as NEWG.CAP.GOV,  groups and squadrons can be assigned 4th-level domains such as GROUP2.NEWG.CAP.GOV.  or, in certain instances, your wing or region headquarters may be able to set a “directory” for you under their existing domain, i.e. newg.cap.gov/group2.  If a wing sets a “directory” for you under their existing domain, you do not need to complete step “3” below.

3. You then submit your request for a CAP.GOV domain.   If your web-browser supports

using online forms, you can submit your request online here.  Or, you can printout the online form and send it by facsimile to: CAP.GOV Administrator 866.302.4197 or, you can print and mail the online form  to: CIVIL AIR PATROL, Attn CAP.GOV Administrator, 25701 South Street Bldg 1506 Selfridge ANGB MI 48034.

You should notify the organization that has agreed to provide server services to host the proposed CAP.GOV domain that a port scan will be immediately conducted on the applicable IP address in an effort to identify potential security vulnerabilities of the server. If potential security vulnerabilities are discovered, you will be asked to address those issues before the domain is configured. Once a domain is configured, one or two scans per year may be conducted  thereafter, which  typically are conducted on the 1st, 10th or 20th of month.

What alternatives are available for a server to host a CAP.GOV domain?

There are numerous options.  For example, some wings and regions operate their own Internet servers and they can assist you. There are also CAP units that will assist units outside of their wings or regions.  If you need assistance, contact your wing webmaster, IT Department or the CAP.GOV Administrator.

If  you are having problems or have questions regarding the CAP.GOV domain name server system, please contact the CAP.GOV Administrator. Notice of any CAP.GOV  DNS problems should also be sent by facsimile to CAP.GOV Administrator at: 402-309-7665 ext 7010.

If you  are having problems or have questions regarding the CAPNHQ.GOV system, you should contact the CAPNHQ.GOV Administrator
